Social Listening

The company I chose to observe the social media presence is Netflix and their recent success on their new movie "Extraction" featuring Chris Hemsworth. Netflix's value proposition is to provide a unique channel to watch films and TV series. Recently, Netflix has come out with a new movie called "Extraction" and it has amassed 90 million viewers within the first month after the release, marking it the biggest premier in Netflix history.

Following the premier of the movie, people have been flooding social media posting comments related to the movie, some praising Netflix for a creating a good plot and some criticizing the violence and casting. I chose to write this blog post about Netflix because of how they market their newly released movies. Netflix has adopted a business model where they do not push advertisements as a main means of boosting revenue, while still keeping a faithful customer base. Popular series such as "House of Cards" were made by Netflix. I want to see the effects of what social media criticism has on a company like Netflix. Going back to the topic, social media has seen some influx of comments, both positive and negative. Both of these comments referred to the main actor Chris Hemsworth, who has been in other popular movies such as the Thor series and the Avengers series.

What these comments say about Netflix is that they are effectively using their resources in order to gain the attention of the audience. According to deadline.com, the script for "Extraction 2" had been set for writing. Even though there are positive comments in social media, some people criticized the movie and also Netflix as using repetitive and cliche themes for this movie and capitalizing the fact that a well known actor is starring in it. With these comments, Netflix faces a marketing challenge to be able to fulfill their value proposition and also put out good movies.

The marketing strategy Netflix is going for is using a celebrity's fame to build a fan base for their movies and/or series. Netflix has recognized their customers based on how popular some of the movies that they have on their platform. Another strategy they utilized is to do market research of their viewers by recommending similar genres of movies in the end of watching a movie on Netflix. This builds a personalized customer preference that Netflix uses in order to keep recommending potential movies that the select viewer may like. If I was the brand manager for Netflix, I would send out a statement in the form of a short video on Netflix talking about the vision and mission of the company. This would serve as a sort of guarantee or reassurance to the viewers that Netflix will continue to improve to bring a unique platform for movies and TV shows.
